Glass Enclosure OptionsUpdated a year ago

The beauty of the Aquafire Water Vapor Fireplace Insert is you get the glow and ambiance of a traditional fire without the added danger that traditional fires bring. There is no need to protect yourself or other people from the flames by installing a glass wall or fireplace grate. In fact, completely enclosing the fireplace hearth and/or fireplace insert in glass can create condensation as the vapor flames are not able to dissipate into the ambient air. If you need to put glass in front of the fireplace insert, we strongly recommend a half glass wall or a glass structure with openings at the top or bottom so that fresh air can get to the top vents of the fireplace insert and so the vapor flames can dissipate.

A half or pony glass wall can be useful in a couple of scenarios:

  • You have a strong air current or draft that is affecting the flame height.
  • You need to protect the inserts from guests/visitors reaching into or putting things into the fireplace insert.
  • It is a see-through fireplace that has one side exposed to the outdoors. In that case, you could put a complete glass wall on one side and have the other open to the indoor space.

If you do have glass covering the fireplace insert, we recommend allowing air intake through a toe kick or open wall space. The air requirements are as follows:

  • 20" insert requires 50 sq inches of unrestricted air intake
  • 40" insert requires 100 sq inches of unrestricted air intake
  • 60" insert requires 150 sq inches of unrestricted air intake
  • Etc... if you have multiples installed into one enclosure, each 20" needs at least 50 sq inches of unrestricted air intake to create the vapor flame effect.
